Fog and Frost Resistant Windshields Being Developed

Dealing with foggy and frosted vehicle glass is no fun.  Not only does it severely reduce a driver’s visibility, but cleaning it requires extra time in the morning that many people simply do not have. That said, we have good news: soon there might be a special coating for windshields that would prevent both conditions from occurring.

Now, you might be wondering, how is this going to work? Honestly, considering fog and frost involve different phases of water, it is a perfectly reasonable question to ask. According to an article by lifescience.com, the material used in the windshield coating contains both hydrophilic (water attracting) and hydrophobic (water repelling) properties. When combined together, they lower the freezing temperature of the water, which in turn reduces the likelihood of the windshield frosting.   As the coating warms up, it simply releases the water. This prevents the windshield from fogging up since the water evaporates.

Regardless of whether we truly understand how it works, this would be a wonderful technological advancement for cars of the future.  Not only would drivers save time on their daily commute, but the number of auto accidents would be reduced as well.   That is what we call a winning proposition.
